Campbell-Brown and Smith are Jamaica's best

Kingston JAM - World 100m champion Veronica Campbell-Brown and World Championships silver medallist Maurice Smith were on Wednesday named Jamaica's track & field's athletes for 2007.

Glen Mills, who guided Usain Bolt to a national record 19.75 seconds and silver in Osaka, was named Coach of the Year.

Campbell-Brown, who apart from winning the 100m gold in Osaka, Japan in 11.01 seconds, secured silver in the 200m (22.34 SB) and 4x100m relay, easily prevailed, while Smith, the decathlon silver medallist edged out World 100m record holder Asafa Powell. Campbell-Brown was not present to collect her award at the function.

In Osaka, Smith set a national record 8644 points, beating his previous best of 8349 to finish second behind Olympic, European champion and World record holder Roman Sebrle of the Czech Republic (8,676).

Smith was thrilled with his award, but while saying 'thanks', he noted: "It's a bit overwhelming for me"

He also added: "I realised that after my performance at the World Championships I could be the best in the world. I was willing to take on the challenge and now I am really proud of myself".

Powell and his MVP teammate Sherone Simpson, along with their coach Stephen Francis were the 2006 winners.
